We Heart Pink Moon Goods Customers!

My day started with a lovely message from a customer. She had a question about a product and while sending an email with her question she also shared how much she enjoyed the shop and shared some of her artwork which just filled me with so much joy. It made me think, part of what makes Pink Moon Goods so special to me is the customers that make up our community. So today I want to share with you a little bit about who those customers are and why we heart them so much. Without these wonderful humans our shop just would not be quite the special place that we think it is.

The Pink Moon Goods customer comes in many different styles. Some folks are looking for a single product and when they find it they are happy but they may not be interested in more. Other times they find that one thing and they are very happy to have found it in our shop because they also find so many more things to love. At our physical location this can sometimes be someone looking for a weck jar. They google where to find them locally and they come in to the shop surprised to find it filled with so many other things that they want in their lives. Many online customers stumble upon our shop when they are looking for maybe a Redecker cleaning brush. We can get orders for the simplest thing like maybe a dish brush replacement but other times that lover of Redecker will purchase several other products by the brand. Those customers are what we call lovers of a well-made cleaning tool.

One type of customer that I always appreciate is someone who is looking for ways to change their impact on the planet and the way they function in the world. They find our shop looking for one thing but they obviously spend time looking around at other items (whether in person or online) or maybe reading about our commitments and they are stoked to find a shop that cares so much about being intentional and thoughtful with the goods they offer. This always makes me happy to hear because one of my goals is to make changing your habits easier. If we can help in even the smallest way it is a win for us both.

Of course one thing that defines the customers we have is the products they are seeking and a certain type of customer will always be after the same type of item whether it's someone who likes the Morita Miw goods or a lover of Baggu we take so much pleasure in knowing that we can offer the things that customer loves the most. For instance, there is Queen Liza, the incense monster, who is addicted to Hibi incense. This human has a wonderful sense of humor and many a day after placing an order will send me an email that always puts a smile on my face.

The reason that I know this much about my customers is that they (you) reach out to me to share your experiences with the shop, the products, being in the shop, or receiving a package from us in the mail. When I do hear from customers it is honestly one of my favorite things. I think the main reason why it has such an impact on me is that because I am in the shop (both in person and online) day in and day out it can start to feel a little banal. Hearing from someone else's experience helps to remind you of the special feeling encounters with the shop create. When a customer emails me to ask a question they are often surprised to get a reply email from an actual human that appears to care about their experience. In truth, I feel the exact same way. So much of customer service these days is anonymous and for me as a store owner there is nothing more pleasing than hearing from a customer about their experience with a product. It reminds me that I am doing more than just sharing goods with the world.

This morning I heard from Lauren Ari when she wrote to ask me about an undated planner that we had in stock. Lauren is an artist in California and the image above is one of the few images that she shared with me and I absolutely love her work. If you want to see more you can visit her website here: Lauren Ari. When she did she shared these words with me:

I am interested in the berrylicious planner but from the photos I cannot tell if it has tabs for each month on the side.
I was hoping you could tell me more about it.
Thanks, Lauren Ari

P.S. I am an artist and I am loving shopping on your site it makes me happy. I love reading your blog and knowing about you.
I thought it would be fun to share some of the things I make.

There are a couple of reasons that I enjoyed Lauren's email. For one thing as I mentioned above she reminds me that even though I may have forgotten at times the website is enjoyable to look at. Even more impactful is her comment that she enjoys reading the blog and learning about me. Some of you may be surprised that I still to do this day find it kind of amazing that anyone actually reads this blog. I know right! But it's true. So when someone tells me that it gives me a little burst of energy to just keep doing what I am doing.

Sometimes I receive an email or review that is of a more serious nature and moving in a different way. This customer shared her experience with purchasing this tiny weck jar. This customer was having a rough go of it when she received two pieces of life-altering bad news in the course of two week. As she tried to make sense of the impending life transitions she set out to take on a new hobby to fill her time and space.

After recovering from the shock and uncertainty of those two life events, I sought something I could do with all my time and energy at home that would be healthy(ish), not require new clothes or equipment, had a learning curve, had some kind of low-key schedule or rhythm, and was creative (artistically expressive, nurturing, AND nourishing in all the ways) I found sourdough. I had all the basics already in my tiny NYC kitchen and got started. After a bumpy start (and starter) After many failures across about 5 mos, I am now consistently making good doughs that provide delicious baked goods. But I only want to bake 1-2x per week. This means that I don’t want copious amounts of starter discard around - or have to feed a starter 1-2x daily. I wanted to maintain only a “tiny” starter, and I didn’t want to have to wash out my one little jar just to feed it. I had seen those mini Weck tulip jars on some FB reels. But Amazon AND Weck seemed to only sell them by the dozen or half dozen. And I always look for alternatives to Amazon anyway, and as I said, I have a micro kitchen with overflowing cupboards already. So I Googled the jars specifically and finally your site came up! (Maybe on page 2) And you sold them individually!
All this to say - thank you. You had exactly what I wanted, even if I didn’t “need” it. Your shipping was quick and your packing was terrific (except not a fan of plastic bubble wrap) and I’m delighted to see that you’re a small, privately owned  business with an ethos I’m happy to support - even if the monetary cost is slightly higher, because the rest is priceless. On top of all that, it was such a pleasant surprise to find your handwritten note. It means a lot to this old-school customer, and I thought I should let you know.

I am not sure that I can convey in words the impact this email had on me. I can say that it reminded me that sometimes just one little jar can have a huge impact in someones life and that the little things we do to make each customers experience special truly do make an impact. This customer also shared her experience with my shop on a social media sourdough group which resulted in us getting a ton of orders for this tiny little jar. I call them the Tiny Sourdough Brigade!

Another favorite type of customer is the one who introduces me to a new product that becomes a shop favorite. You have heard me mention Ewan before. He and his mother are very fond of Morita Miw products and asked me repeatedly to special order these little pouch handkerchiefs. After about the third time I thought maybe there is something about these pouches that I am missing. So I asked Ewan's mother to share with me what they used them for and once she explained that to me I jumped on ordering them and they have been a huge success. I have learned a lot about animals from Ewan as you can see in this excerpt from an email that his mom sent me:

I told Ewan that you’re not familiar with the echidna (the new pink washcloth) and he wanted me to pass along this info to you.
  • They are monotremes, egg-laying mammals along with the platypus
  • There are 4 species of echidna, 3 long-beaked and 1 short-beaked
    • 2 of the long-beaked echidnas are critically endangered
  • 1 long-beaked echidna is named after David Attenborough
    • Attenborough is one of Ewan’s heroes and will be celebrating his 100th birthday this May!
Not only did I learn something about the natural world, Ewan inspired me to carry a new product that has become a staple in the shop and more than that he gave me hope that there are young people that care about the planet and educating others about the importance of caring for its animal inhabitants.

The last type of customer I want to share about is the one that just puts a big smile on my face due to their sense of humor.

Queen Liza, who I mentioned above, is fond of adding some humor into her reviews that always make me laugh and feel really good about making connections with humans from all over the planet. She reminds me that although the connection is not face to face there is still plenty of opportunity to connect with strangers.

Each of you make a difference to me and my staff. You give us the motivation to continue doing what we do everyday. Every time someone tells me that they read my blog my heart fills with joy. Every time someone walks through our door and smiles as if they are seeing a beloved friend it makes me jittery in a good way. Like I want to wiggle dance with excitement.

We do it for you! So thanks for making it meaningful and fun. It means the world to us.
