Meet the Makers

The story of Opinel is one of the fabulous destiny of a little Savoyard folding knife invented by Joseph Opinel in 1890 which quickly became an item of daily life and elevated itself as a world design icon. A family story at the heart of the French Alps, for 133 years.

Led by his passion for machinery and the manufacturing process, Joseph Opinel decided to invent an object which he could manufacture using modern technology. Against his father's wishes, he spent most of his free time refining the shape and manufacturing of a small pocket knife: the Opinel No.08 was born!

The Opinel knife is a popular everyday item whose aesthetics remained unchanged for over a century, with a design that is one of the most successful of all time.

Heritage. Quality. Affordability.  Three ideals that set Opinel apart and make their products beloved by people all over the world including farmers, gardeners, chefs, and outdoor adventurers. The most common wood used by Opinel is beechwood and 90% of the beechwood used is harvested from sustainably harvested forests.
