An Ode to Lovely Linen

Linen is such a luxurious fabric that can be used for so many fabulous things. Here at Pink Moon Goods we are proud to carry the linen goods of Linen Tales, based in Lithuania. Recently we added a few new pieces to our collection so we thought it would be a good time to share  why we love this durable elegant fabric so much.

Linen is made from the flax plant, growing of which requires fewer resources like water or pesticides compared to widely used cotton. When the plant is harvested, different parts of it are used for making various products other than linen fabric, such as twines, ropes, also linen seed oil and meal, both of which are used as food supplements for their health-boosting properties. Finally, flax doesn’t require any chemicals to be produced into linen fabric and the fabric itself is fully biodegradable if no chemicals are used in the making.

Why We Love Linen:

-Linen is the world’s strongest natural fiber, and is highly resistant to abrasion, less prone to wearing and tearing. So you can enjoy your favorite linen pieces for many years without the need to replace them after a couple of washes.

-Because of hollow fibers and loose weaves, air can easily flow through the fabric, meaning linen easily wicks moisture and keeps the body comfortable even in hot temperatures. Plus, linen not only cools but also insulates depending on the temperature, providing comfort all year round.

-Gifted with antibacterial and anti-allergenic properties, linen creates a great microclimate and is friendly to those with sensitive, allergy-prone skin or breathing allergies.

I spent many hours researching to find the perfect ethically manufactured linen goods for the shop.  I knew the hard work paid off when I happened upon a small family owned business called "Linen Tales", based out of Lithuania, that honors both thousand year old traditions, as well as modern sustainability.  They are committed to extending the product life cycle and to reducing environmental impact throughout every segment of their business, including the design process, supply chain, and logistics choices.

Understanding and valuing the qualities and health benefits of linen, Lithuanians have given this plant a special place in their folklore: linen fabric, as well as other flax products, were an important part of both traditional ceremonies and daily lives. It was common to pass linen clothing and home linen pieces from generation to generation as heirloom.
We also learned some fun facts about this magical plant. In ancient Lithuania, countryside and agricultural work were in a harmonious relationship. Flax cultivation, which requires five times more physical effort than most grains, was one of the main areas of work. However, Lithuanians highly valued flax due to it being strong both as material and medicine; as a result myths, games, fairy tales, and songs were made based on the cycles of flax cultivation and processing. The beginning and end of the works as well as the most important events of flax cultivation were marked with big celebrations. These remarkable examples of folklore have survived up to this day.
