Colorful and simple, washi tape can be torn by hand and is easy to reposition. The tape can be used on paper, objects and walls. Washi tape is ideal for temporary decoration, for tiny objects to entire rooms, and for ordinary or special occasions throughout the day, from sealing a lunch bag to making a wrapped gift look special.  Not only that but it is made from paper so it is biodegradable and compostable.

This washi tape design is a part of a special collaboration with Japanese design firm Mina Perhonen. When designer and founder, Akira Minagawa, began his brand in 1995, he committed to creating “a brand that will last at least a hundred years”. He conceived of activities that will transcend generations and an intention to think about what he and his team can do for the future through design.

The brand name “minä” means “I,” and “perhonen” means “butterfly.”

Even during the creation process, they value ideas and ingenuities birthed from the individuality of those involved, as well as handcraft. They aspire to bring joy in both creation and utilization. This includes treating residue fabrics from production as valuable materials which can be purchased from the firm.

100th anniversary design message:

These 3 patterns include "swing camellias," which bloom like dancing camellias, "ballade," featuring flowers lining up and peeking out while waiting for the snow to melt, and "tambourine" small image arrangements that represent Minä Perhonen. The yellow and blue tapes have names that mean "light" and "wave" respectively. They have been made with the hope that they will be close to you on days filled with light.

Meet the Makers
MT is the original brand of washi paper masking tape, created by the 100 year old paper adhesives company Kamoi Kakoshi and produced in Japan.   In 2006, the company offered a tour to three women in Tokyo who were using their industrial tapes for beautiful craft projects.  Amazed by this surprising and wonderful usage, Kamoi Kakoshi was inspired to develop an entirely new and original category of tape: MT brand washi tape.  The superior level of ‘just right’ adhesion allows MT to be easily repositioned on most objects and to be used on painted walls without damaging paint.
